Safe Consumption Sites: The Epidemic of Intravenous Drug Use and Needles

Safe Consumption Sites: The Epidemic of Intravenous Drug Use and Needles

Can safe injection sites, now called safe consumption sites, help address drug use on the streets.?

Last year Governor Brown vetoed a bill that would have allowed for what were then called safe injection sites to be built. What are these sites? How would they help get folks who are using intravenous drugs to be rehabilitated? Are they the right solution? What is the plan to get them built?

Here to discuss are three folks at the center of the safe consumption sites debate:

Supervisor Matt Haney is a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 6 (Tenderloin, Civic Center, Mid-Market, SOMA, Yerba Buena, Rincon Hill, South Beach, Mission Bay, Treasure Island). His district is at the epicenter of the intravenous drug epidemic.

Dr. Vitka Eisen, the President and Chief Executive Officer of HealthRIGHT 360, a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers and one of the largest providers of behavioral health services to marginalized Californians,

Laura Thomas, California’s deputy state director of the Drug Policy Alliance.

Matt, Laura and Dr. Eisen will help demystify what these sites really are all about and will be in conversation about the way to implement them properly.
